The Romans saw tears of the gods, the Greeks saw fossilized sunlight . . . Amber's various colours have always inspired poets and artists, and the undisputed creative highlight is the legendary Amber Room, a commission by Prussian King Friedrich I from 1701-1711. He nearly ruined the state's finances by ordering the most famous amber turners of the time to manufacture the "most expensive wallpaper in the world." Later, his son Friedrich Wilhelm I gave the room to Peter the Great as a gift and it was eventually installed near St. Petersburg and became known as the "eighth wonder of the world." The head of the Amber Room restoration, master craftsman Boris Igdalov, personally oversaw the creation of Faber Castell's Pen of the Year. All amber rings are individually processed, polished, and combined with platinized rings for a dazzling interplay of precise silver lines of precious metal next to warm caramel colours of "organic" stone. The instrument features an 18k bicolour gold nib and solid spring-loaded clip. Platinum-plated cap with amber inlay protects the knob of the plunger mechanism. Each individually numbered instrument is enclosed in an exclusive wooden case with an "amber eye" and is accompanied by an authentication certificate bearing the personal signature of Boris Igdalov. |

The year 2005 will see the launch of a fountain pen crafted from a fascinating material - stingray leather. Galuchat or stingray leather is considered to be the most durable leather in the world, offering a soft and smooth feel while being remarkably resilient as well as both waterproof and fireproof. Each stingray skin is characterized by an exceptional pearl mosaic pattern with special color nuances, varying in gray tones and light olive green or ivory hues. As a result, the Pen of the Year 2005 is available in two different colors with each fountain pen having its own distinctive color. Each Galochat barrel is crafted in an elaborate process requiring more than thirty steps, from selection to tanning to buffing and finishing. The result is a masterpiece imbued with a beauty found only in the depths of the ocean.
