They are decorated with Celtic symbols. These popular designs of elaborate knot-work are found in masterpieces of Celtic Art such as the Book of Kells.
The Book of Kells was written around the year 800 AD and is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world. It is written on vellum and contains a Latin text of the four Gospels in insular majuscule script accompanied by magnificent and intricate whole pages of decoration with smaller painted decorations appearing throughout the text. The text is bound in four volumes and is on display in The Old Library, Trinity College, Dublin.
Legend has it that the monks used the intricate patterns within the borders to distract the devils. While the devils were occupied trying to unravel these knots, the monks would be free to get on with the important business of transcribing the gospels unhindered. Let us hope that the Celtic design on this range of pens will allow the user the same unhindered time to write their message.
